The cult of the keffiyeh

The keffiyeh has become more a symbol of sentiment than understanding for some. Many who wear it seem unaware of Hamas’ brutality or the realities of life in Palestine. Ironically, most keffiyehs in the West are mass-produced in China, offering no benefit to the Palestinian economy, which now has only one weavery left.

For some, the keffiyeh represents a craving for moral significance or victimhood. It allows wearers to briefly escape their privileged lives and adopt an identity they perceive as oppressed or exotic.
